I've always liked to read and tell stories, but I was also a captive of the corporate world for more than forty years. Anyone who has lived life at the senior levels of large companies knows there's little time for a writing career, and it took retirement from that world to launch a new pursuit. My first book was a work of non-fiction – NEEDS Selling Solutions – co-authored with my friend Jeff Allen. From that positive experience, I learned that writing a book is a challenge, but it's not insurmountable!
So I set out to use my life experiences as a foundation for entertaining suspense thrillers, using the backdrop of a large corporation for my tales of intrigue. Since my debut story, Three Weeks Less a Day in 2016, I've released a new novel each year, and my sixth, A Slippery Shadow, hit the bookshelves on April 1, 2022.
My working career provided a wealth of insight into varied and diverse situations. I’ve worked in a supermarket, sold appliances, distributed motorcycles, launched an automobile dealer network, and provided financing to help businesses grow. Every industry was very different from the others. Every company had its distinctive culture and character, but all were units of large corporations with operations around the world.
So, travel has always been a significant component of my roles. I had the pleasure of visiting almost every city, town, village, and hamlet in Canada while leading sales and marketing activities for the motorcycle division, then starting the automobile business of Suzuki Motor Company’s Canadian subsidiary.
My job took with a subsidiary of ITT me to most of the states in the US. I enjoyed visiting all EU countries while living and working in Germany for several years – spearheading the creation of a new business unit for Deutsche Bank. And my responsibilities with a unit of GE Capital allowed me to explore several countries in Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Every trip was an education. Learning about business practices and cultures before trips was essential. Every day in a country mined valuable information to develop a deeper understanding of its people, culture, laws, and treasures.
Today, I have the good fortune to serve as Board Advisor to the Writers' Community of York Region - a vibrant collection of writers from all genres supporting one another and improving our craft. We number almost 100 members and welcome membership from our area and beyond. Many events we hold are virtual, making it easy to become a member and benefit from the collegiality of the group and the knowledge of our expert presenters. Below, you'll find a link to the WCYR website if you'd like to check us out.
Experts say we should write about things we know best. In my case, those subjects are business, travel, and people. As an author, I aim to share some experiences, insights, and views as I create suspense stories designed to entertain people worldwide -- one reader at a time.
